Shalan teaches Middle-Eastern violin in De Centrale in Gent and Muziekpublique in Brussels.

He also conducts workshops and lecture inside and outside Belgium.

Being educated as a classical violinist, Shalan tries to approach Arabic violin from the view of a classical violinist. In the workshop, several fundamental concepts are explained and illustrated: Maqams, theory, history, forms, ornaments and of course, improvisations (Taksim).

Violin played and has been playing a main role in Arabic music since the Arabic ensemble (Takht) was settled as the typical formula. Solo violin or violin sections were essential in music of Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt, Palestine and Turkey.
